We have extensive experience working in the trades, finance, government, and philanthropic sectors, including health, employment, and vocational education.

EttieKits

In 2022, our Aotearoa Online Sex and Dating Survey  investigated the world of online dating and we discovered lots of New Zealanders are having lots of unprotected sex.

We created EttieKits STI Rapid Test Kits to help New Zealanders prioritise their sexual health. Purchasing an EttieKits STI Rapid Test Mult-Kit allows you to test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and Herpes-2 in the privacy of your own home and with results in under 15 minutes.

Named for Ettie Rout, the world’s first sexual health campaigner, EttieKits is an innovative solution for an age-old problem.

Trade Careers

The pioneering Trade Careers Insights Research conducted by Tania in 2021 revealed the barriers New Zealand women face when entering the building, construction and infrastructure industries. This solutions-focused report was commissioned by TEC to better understand the employment situation of the 22,000 New Zealand women who lost their jobs due to COVID-19.

Drawing on these insights, Angela worked with BCITO to create the Trade Careers platform, which includes a web-series, podcast and the first set of industry guidelines on Active Bystanders and Preventing Sexual Harassment and Bullying.

We funded this work because it is important to know what barriers and opportunities are out there for women getting into trades, especially as they are an under-represented group. This survey shows there are still some perception and social barriers for women. If we can make it easier for 50% of the population to enter the trades, that could go a long way to easing skills shortages as well as improve long term career opportunities for women.” - Tim Fowler, Chief Executive, Tertiary Education Commission.

Hi Money

In 2021, a staggering 80% of women rated their financial wellbeing as moderate, low or very low (Financial Services Council 2021). This aligns with findings from Double Denim’s 2017 Gender Intelligence Report, which revealed that many women felt financial organisations simply don’t understand them.

Together with therapist Rachel Davies, Angela has created Hi Money - the world's first online course combining therapeutic techniques with feminist financial principles to support women in exploring their relationship with money.

"Investing in my money mindset is the key that unlocked a world of financial abundance and freedom." - Alice.

Gender Justice Collective (GJC)

The GJC was formed in the run-up to the 2020 General Election and  brought together 25-plus women’s organisations, women and wāhine to ask the question, “What if Aotearoa New Zealand was the best place in the world to be a woman?”. Angela, Erin and Tania are founding members of the GJC.

The GJC conducted the YouChoose2020 Survey, which asked over 3,500 women, wāhine, trans, intersex, and non-binary people what they most needed in order to thrive. This was the most comprehensive data set on what was happening for women and non-binary people in Aotearoa New Zealand since the arrival of COVID-19.

The data collected through the YouChoose2020 Survey was used by the Public Policy Institute at The University of Auckland to rank and review each political party's policies and their commitment to gender equity with the result being the WeChoose2020 Election Scorecard, helping New Zealanders make an informed choice in the 2020 General Election. This approach was a world first, in that it centred the needs and aspirations of women in the ranking of election policies.

Project Gender has continued to work on the many policy issues that were uncovered by the YouChoose2020 research, including leading the advocacy for the establishment of a National Women’s Health Strategy.

National Women’s Health Strategy

The majority of respondents to the YouChoose2020 Survey wanted the government to devote more attention and resources to women’s health and wellbeing. The survey results showed that the pandemic had taken a huge toll on women, wāhine, intersex, trans and non-binary people’s health and wellbeing, with only 55 percent of respondents agreeing that they could access everything they need to ensure their own health and wellbeing.

Project Gender led the successful advocacy for the inclusion of a National Women’s Health Strategy in the Pae Ora legislation.  We delivered two written submissions and one oral submission to the Health Select Committee, a petition to Parliament, generated over 30 media stories, and changed the law.

Mako Mama Mangopare - Single Parents Project

In 2022, Project Gender were contracted by the Peter McKenzie Project to explore opportunities for systemic change to ensure greater equity for low-income, single parent households.

In partnership with Ngāti Kahungunu, we carried out focus groups and a nationwide online survey, hearing from over 3,500 single parents about their experiences and their ideas for change.

Drawing on these insights, we ran a series of stakeholder hui, meeting with politicians, policymakers, CEOs, NGOs and other decision makers to identify opportunities for a long-term and collective approach to enhancing equity for single parents in Aotearoa.

We delivered evidence-based recommendations as part of a strategic framework for change that is feasible, fit for purpose, and centring the voices of single parents.

Sort it out, Simon

In late 2022, TVNZ announced that it was launching the New Zealand version of “FBoy Island”. Disappointed by this decision by our state broadcaster, Project Gender launched an open letter to Simon Power, TVNZ CEO, on Action Station - gaining nearly 8,000 signatures in several days - asking him to reconsider.

The Aotearoa Online Dating & Sex Survey carried out by Project Gender in 2022 had revealed concerning patterns of behaviour among young New Zealanders around rough sex and consent. Shows like FBoy Island normalise and champion predatory and dangerous sexual behaviour that harms people, particularly young people - TVNZ’s target audience for this show.

Project Gender were invited to meet with TVNZ and early in 2023 delivered a workshop with their senior commissioning team to help them apply a gender lens across their commissioning and programming decisions.
